Magnolia Grandiflora ‘Gallisoniensis’ is evergreen, having glossy light green leaves and fragrant white flowers in late summer and early autumn.
This variety is one of the hardier magnolias, similar to ‘Exmouth’ and introduced from France in the early 19th Century. It is named after Michel Rolland Barrin, Comte de la Galissonière who while in America in the early 18th Century collected seeds and plants which he sent for the gardens at Versailles.
Magnolias produce large opulent flowers, usually in shades of pink or white, in spring or summer. In full bloom, the display can be truly breath-taking. They range in size from large trees to compact shrubs, so there are options to suit most gardens.
Magnolias are usually grown in the ground, but the compact forms can also be grown successfully in containers.
Most magnolias prefer:
- full sun
- fertile, moist, well-drained soil
- slightly acidic or neutral conditions
- a sheltered position
Hardy – cold winter
Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
