Chamaerops humilis also known as the dwarf fan palm is a small species of evergreen palm. This miniature form of the popular Mediterranean Fan Palm was reportedly selected from cultivated plants in Sicily. The Chamaerops humilis it is one of the most cold-tolerant species of palm, withstanding heavy frosts, drought, wind, cold and heat. This hardy and exotic palm adds a touch of the Mediterranean to any home or garden. It’s the perfect architectural palm tree for any landscaping and garden projects!

Characteristics of this dwarf palm

This compact, bushy, suckering palm can grow up to 2m high with a lovely silvery bloom on the undersides of the leaves. The Chamaerops humilis vulcano flowers from spring to summer. The male flowers bright yellow and the female flowers yellow green, followed by yellow to orange-brown fruit. Appearance wise, it grows into a compact plant with short, blunt-tipped, grass green leaves. It’s easy to grow, but slow, and very wind tolerant, so a great choice for exposed coastal gardens. And because it’s so versatile, it looks fantastic in sunny borders and containers.

Caring for your palm

Hardy palm trees can be planted at any time of the year, but ideally it should be done during spring and summer. If planting in the ground, try to dig a hole a good deal bigger than the root-ball. Then, follow with a good soak before planting and back-fill the hole with a free draining compost. It’s best planted in a sunny position in fertile free draining soil where it will tolerate moderately windy spots. Heavy frosts aren’t a problem either, but protection from extreme cold particularly snow and ice is recommended. The Chamaerops humilis ‘Vulcano’ is also a very good palm for containers. They can be happy for many years growing this way just remember to feed and water regularly during the growing period.
