How to create a Mediterranean Garden.
Taking inspiration from sunnier climates will always be popular here in the UK, but what makes a Mediterranean Garden? Often, we take inspiration from their effortlessly beautiful landscapes and impressive garden design with impeccable planting. However, it’s not as difficult as it might seem to recreate the essence of the Mediterranean in your own home. Here, we’ve put together some tips on how to create the look, featuring of course the statement olive tree.

What are the best plants for a Mediterranean Garden
Mediterranean plants add texture, colour, and in some cases structure. If you chose the right plants, you can easily and impressively capture the spirit of sunny lands in almost any garden. Our advice is to go for plants that add form and interest to your planting. Also, it’s important to choose plants that look good all year round (sorry UK but the sun is not as abundant here!). There are our top choices for a Mediterranean garden:
- The self-fertile Arbequina and Picual Olive Tree from Catalonia in Spain. They’re hardy and evergreen providing yearlong colour and elegance in your garden
- Olive trees in all variations such as Mature or young, little, or big, gnarly or twisted, cloud or wispy

- Multi-trunk Trachycarpus Fortunei
- Yucca Treculeana
- Japanese Sago Palm
- Yucca ‘Filifera’
Outside areas and planting
Due to the climate, seating in the Mediterranean is essential. But back home, they can create a wonderful place to relax and unwind on your own or with others. Choose pergolas for shade and rustic outdoor seating for charm and ambience. You could even throw in a hammock for the lighter evenings (throw in a book and glass of wine for good measure).
Pots and containers
Nothing symbolises a Mediterranean garden quite like terracotta pots. The colour, shape and general warmth can be seen glowing from afar. They come in all shapes and sizes (we recommend a wide base, so they’re not easily blown over) and really are the perfect accessory for plants and trees. Just remember to add a glazed saucer underneath providing a steady water stream.
