Whether your tree is living blissfully happy inside or outside, it’s good to know how to repot a plant. For most plants repotting is an easy way to refresh them by providing more room to grow. It might come as a surprise but there are lots of things to consider when repotting plants. There are things such as finding the right soil and choosing the best time of year to repot. However, if you’re a new plant parent we’ve got great advice on how to keep your plant alive whilst repotting it.

Repotting tips
It’s worth noting that repotting is a stressful time for a plant, so try not to do it too often. But if you’re needing to replant to move into a new container or it has outgrown its current one then take these helpful tips:
- If the plant is new, give it a few days or even weeks to acclimate to your home before transferring it to a different container.
- Repotting can mean just changing the soil and not the pot itself, helping to provide new nutrients to the plant.
- If your plant is new and you want to change pots for aesthetics, then be mindful to use a pot similar to the current sized one.
- For plants that have outgrown their current pots, size up about 1 to 2 inches to ensure there is room for growth.
- For larger, floor-sized plants, you’ll likely want to size up 3 to 4 inches, depending on how much you want it to grow.

Step by step how to repot a plant
Loosen the plant’s roots with your hand and gently remove your plant from its pot. If your plant is root-bound, then unbind the roots and trim them then massage the root ball. Then, remove the old potting mix or soil and then add a new fresh potting mix! Finally, place your plant in the position you wish to plant and fill it with soil until it’s secure. However, make sure not to pack too tightly or the roots will struggle to breathe.
