What is a standard tree?
When you buy a tree in a larger size of about 2 metres, it is officially called a ‘standard tree’. Although it might seem odd, standard trees aren’t measured by height, but by the girth of their trunk above soil. This size has nothing to do with a tree’s final height, only the size of the tree when it is purchased. Most standards are between 2 – 3.5 metres tall, but this will vary depending on the species. The slow growing trees may be shorter and vigorous plants like willow can be much taller. Another familiar characteristic of standard trees is the particularly upright stem, supporting a well branched crown. This, alongside their uniformity and symmetry, is why they are so popular in front gardens. They can add a huge amount of kerb appeal without a huge amount of maintenance.
